St. Luke’s-Allentown and LifeAire Systems Partner to Bring Transformational Innovation to Hospital Air Quality for Improved Patient Care

St. Luke’s-Allentown and LifeAire Systems Partner to Bring Transformational Innovation to Hospital Air Quality for Improved Patient Care - Press

St. Luke's University Health Network and LifeAire Systems have formed a strategic partnership to utilize new technology designed to remove airborne pathogens from critical hospital environments.

Studies show that airborne pathogens can contribute to illnesses and infections that can occur during a patient’s stay in hospital. St. Luke’s will collaborate with LifeAire Systems to install LifeAire’s patented in-duct air purification technology at the St. Luke’s Allentown campus. It will remove airborne pathogens from the HVAC circulation within the space that is to be protected, with the goal of reducing patient and staff exposure to these airborne contaminants.

“We are thrilled to have forged this innovative partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network at their Allentown Campus,” Kathryn C. Worrilow, PhD, founder and CEO of LifeAire Systems. “We feel it most appropriate to bring the provision of this technology here to the Lehigh Valley. As a Company located in the Lehigh Valley, we want to provide the finest care for our local residents first and foremost, and then replicate the model in other regions.”

LifeAire Systems technology uses multi-staged levels of air filtration, purification and inactivation media to aggressively remove chemical, particulate and infectious biological pathogens from both outside and re-circulated air. The patented design is mathematically modeled to kill or inactivate the most infectious biological pathogens—such as anthrax spores—on a single pass through the system.

“We continue on our mission to provide the finest possible patient care and look forward to seeing the benefit of the LifeAire Systems innovative new technology,” said Lee Levicoff, Network Vice President and Director of Planning and Construction Management at St. Luke’s.

LifeAire Improves IVF Success

Clinical Pregnancy Rates Increase an Average of 19.7 Percentage Points after Installation of LifeAire System

Lehigh Valley, PA—LifeAire Systems, a technology leader in air filtration for healthcare, announced that data compiled from 14 in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs show an average improvement of 19.7 percentage points in clinical pregnancy rates following installation of its system.

Remediating up to 99.999% of biological and chemical contaminants within the air, LifeAire Systems’ patented, multi-stage purification media creates a pristine environment most conducive to optimal embryo development. The system provides the greatest level of protection from airborne pathogens throughout every stage of embryogenesis, resulting in more positive pregnancy outcomes for patients undergoing IVF treatment.

George Koulianos, M.D., Director of The Center for Reproductive Medicine, Mobile, AL said the impact of LifeAire was seen almost immediately. “Once we put in the LifeAire System, we saw a dramatic increase in our center’s pregnancy rates, above and beyond where we were. We’ve exceeded our wildest expectations in terms of outcomes.”

LifeAire’s in-duct design treats not only the source air before it enters the laboratory space but also the return air that heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems (HVAC) recirculate. The system provides added protection against threatening airborne pathogens entering from an outside source beyond the laboratory’s control. In fact, Krystene DiPaola, M.D., Medical Director of the University of Cincinnati Center for Reproductive Health, said being able to remediate outside pathogens was a huge concern as the facility is located off Ohio’s Interstate 75.

“Our embryos have been insulated from any kind of environmental issue,” she said. “We’ve seen a significant jump in the quality of our embryos and in our culture system, and we’ve seen improvement in the pregnancy rates as well.”

The average improvement of 19.7 percentage points is based on data collected from 3,535 cycles and 7,733 embryos transferred over a nine- to 18-month period following installation of the LifeAire system. The findings are inclusive of all maternal ages.

“By having 14 programs throughout the country share their results with us, we continue to demonstrate the positive impact of the LifeAire Systems’ technology on IVF success,” said Philip Coburn, Chief Operating Officer of LifeAire.

Note on data reported:

An ASRM 2014 abstract of 1,245 cycles demonstrated a statistically significant increase of 14.8% in ongoing pregnancy rate and a statistically significant decrease of 11.9% in loss rate. Additionally, the data demonstrated statistically significant increases in implantation rate and blastocyst conversion rate. These figures are referenced in Fertility and Sterility.

More recently in 2015, data from 14 IVF programs, 3,535 cycles and 7,733 embryos was analyzed. The data was collected from programs having used the LifeAire Systems technology for 6-18 months. Retrospective data was collected for the same period of time prior to the installation of the technology and showed an average weighted increase in clinical pregnancy rates of 19.7%. Specific measures of embryogenesis also demonstrated statistically significant improvements, and the data is currently being analyzed.

LifeAire Systems shares expertise beyond realm of IVF

POP City shares exciting news about LifeAire Systems.

"People really don't think about the air," explains LifeAire Systems Founder and CEO Kathryn C. Worrilow, Ph.D., who worked for years in in vitro fertilization before launching her company. "It took a total of 10 years to identify the problem and the environment a human embryo needs to prosper and survive. When I looked to purchase something to achieve that [environment], there wasn't anything. That was completely unacceptable to me. Once we understood it, there had to be a solution."

Why did Mike Magee choose to work with LifeAire Systems?

(As released May 12, 2015)

Why did Mike Magee choose to work with LifeAire Systems?

The same reason that IVF laboratories across the country are choosing to install them.

In April, veteran life sciences executive Mike Magee joined LifeAire Systems as Vice President of Sales and Business Development following highly successful posts at Origio/Cooper Surgical and Zander Medical.

Why the move? Because, in the world of air purification, LifeAire Systems is a game changer. With clinical pregnancy outcomes increasing at rates of nearly 20%*, LifeAire Systems’ technology is making a difference in IVF programs and in the lives of their patients.

Mike’s 15 years of clinical experience has made him acutely aware of the protective role ambient air plays in all critical environments—not just those within an IVF laboratory. That’s why he’s leading the charge to expand LifeAire’s powerful, patented technology into critical care and healthcare applications. Offering a variety of configurations and retrofitting capabilities, LifeAire Systems can be easily installed in existing structures as well as in new construction.

Visit www.lifeaire.com or email Mike directly at mmagee@lifeaire.com to learn how LifeAire Systems can make a dramatic difference in your practice, facility or laboratory.

* At this point in time, the weighted average increase in clinical pregnancy rates post-installation of the LifeAire System is 19.7 percentage points, as compared to pre-installation data. Data is inclusive of all maternal ages as provided by 14 IVF programs (3,535 cycles and 7,733 embryos transferred).

LifeAire Systems in the news

LifeAire Systems in the news - Press

Kathryn C. Worrilow was director of the in vitro fertilization laboratory at Lehigh Valley Health Network in 1999 when she uncovered a frustrating trend: a roller coaster of pregnancy rates.

IVF, a method of creating embryos by mixing eggs and sperm in a lab dish, had been around for years but was still far from perfect as a reproductive technology. One month the numbers at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg would be up, the next they'd be down.

Worrilow's team went to work finding a cause for the inconsistent readings. Was it in the lab protocols? Was the incubator functioning properly? They uncovered nothing.

"And the last thing we looked at was the air," recalled Worrilow, 57, of Upper Macungie Township. "Because we ran a clean room. Why would you look at the air?"

Advanced Air Purification Fertility Clinic Moves To Farmington, CT

Advanced Air Purification Fertility Clinic Moves To Farmington, CT - Press

Farmington, CT - One of the country's few fertility clinics to use an advanced air purification system has opened in town.

The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, formerly located at UConn Health, recently opened on 2 Batterson Park Road.

Chief Operating Officer Paul Verrastro said the new facility uses a LifeAire System, which has been known to dramatically increase clinical pregnancies through in vitro fertilization.

"It is the most state of the art technology of its kind," Verrastro said. "In fact, few centers in the country have it, it's so new."

With the LifeAire System, he said air is pushed out of the in vitro fertilization lab instead of being pulled in.

He said the clinic brought in an internationally recognized environmental consultant who tested the air quality for three days. The consultant said it was the best air quality she had ever tested in the country and potentially in the world, Verrastro said.

"Embryos, unlike human beings, have no immune system. They are very sensitive and susceptible to what is going on in the environment around them," Verrastro said. "If those negative variables find themselves into an IVF lab environment, embryos struggle to thrive and develop."

The clinic started doing procedures on Feb. 1 and Verrastro said the preliminary results in the new facility have exceeded their expectations. He said they have seen an enormous improvement in embryo development, resulting in positive pregnancies.

The clinic is still affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and runs the fellowship program in Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at the University of Connecticut Health Center, according to a press release.

Southwest Embryology Summit (SWES) January 3 – 4, 2015

Las Vegas, NV (January 5, 2015) The 4th SWES was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV. LifeAire Systems was honored to be a participant and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the more than 55 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Laboratory Directors and embryologists in attendance. Inclusive of these attendees, were 15 IVF industry vendors. The first day consisted of vendor sponsored presentations that were 30 minutes in length. Topics ranged from pre-implantation genetic screening and diagnosis (PGS & PGD), continuous culture media, time-lapse photography, and vitrification. The second day of the meeting consisted of 75-minute presentations, and topics ranged from reporting updates required by SART and the latest news on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and the environment.

The LifeAire Systems sponsored topic was “Take Control: Own Your Environment” and was presented by founder, Kathryn Worrilow, Ph.D. The presentation was well received and sparked spirited dialogue over the impact ambient air in the clinical space has on clinical outcomes. Dr. Worrilow also shared date recently presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) conference, detailing the clinically significant increases in blastocyst conversion rates, implantation rates, clinical pregnancy rates, ongoing pregnancy rates and the decrease in loss rates by those IVF programs that have installed the LifeAire System.

Also in attendance of the meeting was Antonia Gilligan, President of Alpha Environmental, a well-respected third party air testing and ART environmental chemist consultant who presented on the second day of the meeting. Her topic was “ART and the Environment”. This was an extremely important presentation for LifeAire, considering Ms. Gilligan is considered to be the “gold standard” when it comes to air quality analysis of an IVF Laboratory. Key to note was Ms. Gilligan’s overwhelming endorsement to one of LifeAire System’s most recent installations. In Ms. Gilligan’s words, “she almost fell off her chair when she saw how good the air quality test results were; you knocked it out of the park”. Erik Marsh, LifeAire Systems Director of Sales and Business Development commented, “Needless to say this endorsement has been well received by LifeAire Systems and we look forward to continuing to share the LifeAire System technology and incredibly positive impact on outcomes with our clinical colleagues and their patients!”

LifeAire Systems Announces Dramatic Increases In Clinical Pregnancy Rates Through In Vitro Fertilization As a Result of Revolutionary New Technology

Data shows direct correlation between quality of the ambient air and clinical outcomes – technology promising in all critical care environments and air security*

Honolulu, Hawaii (October 22, 2014) – New data has demonstrated dramatic increases in clinical pregnancies through In Vitro Fertilization across the United States where fertility programs have utilized a revolutionary new technology known as LifeAire Systems. The data, resulting from a four-year study, has demonstrated a direct correlationbetween the removal of airborne pathogens and clinical outcomes.

Couples and individuals facing fertility issues can now realistically hope for improved results in what can be an emotionally and financially difficult process in their attempts to achieve pregnancy.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the clinical outcome data that our colleagues are sharing with us from LifeAire installations around the United States,” said Kathryn C. Worrilow, Ph. D., founder of LifeAire Systems, LLC. “The efficiency of the IVF process has improved dramatically across the board. One program went from 40% clinical pregnancy rate to 60% changing nothing in their process but adding a LifeAire System. The numbers have been overwhelming in all maternal age groups.”

The study, which was collective of data from IVF laboratories across the United States protected by the LifeAire System, demonstrated the percentage change in all key clinical categories inclusive of all maternal ages. The study compared the same outcome rates before and after the LifeAire System installation. The data showed an improvement in implantation rates from 28.4% to 42.6%. Clinical pregnancy rates increased from 56.7% to 67.3%; ongoing pregnancy rates increased from 39.0% to 53.5%; and loss rates or miscarriage rates decreased from 32.4% to 20.6%.

LifeAire Systems technology was created by Dr. Worrilow, a leading embryologist, who painstakingly sought answers to unexplained positive and negative changes in clinical outcomes in IVF laboratories. After learning that the unexpected presence of airborne pathogens played a significant role during a decline in their clinical pregnancy rates, further research demonstrated that existing air filtration systems were unable to remove airborne contaminants to the level required for the human embryo.

Many of the pathogens, both chemical and biological, were produced by a variety of common external events long overlooked because of the use of air filtration systems. These events include, but not limited to, area construction, vehicle exhaust, road resurfacing, seasonal changes, agriculture, pesticides – even colognes.

“There are a multitude of variables that impact the process of In Vitro Fertilization. To me, having outside environmental events influence someone’s chances of a successful outcome is unacceptable. The genesis of the LifeAire System was to solve that problem, to remove the variable of air from the In Vitro culture process,” said Dr. Worrilow.

The solution Dr. Worrilow and her team of chemists, engineers and physicists created is the LifeAire System, a multi-staged, patented air purification system that comprehensively remediates 99.999% of all airborne pathogens, making LifeAire the most powerful and effective defense available for airborne pathogens.

*Data is inclusive of all maternal ages, 1,245 cycles, 9,711 embryos and 2,808 embryos transferred as reported in Fertility and Sterility.

Cleaner Air Boosts Fertility Rates at UC West Chester

By Cecilia Parish

Doctors say it is something in the air that’s helping infertile couples conceive at West Chester Hospital. Ever since the installation of a high-tech air filtration system the UC Health Center for Reproductive Health has seen a significant increase in fertility for In Vitro fertilization.

She says when you get right down to it the state-of-the-art air filtration system is the only thing that is different at the fertility clinic. The doctors are the same. The medicine is the same. The In Vitro fertilization procedure is the same. And that’s why she’s crediting the air system for the boost in pregnancy rates.

The special air, clear of bacteria, viruses, VOCs (off-gasses) and other toxicans, is pumped into the surgical suite and the incubation area where fertilization takes place and the embryos are stored outside the body for an estimated three to five days.

No charge for second round of IVF if first doesn’t take

“We have become so confident in getting patients pregnant that we implemented a new program into a new system that if our patients are not pregnant within their first cycle they can actually come back for a second cycle without additional financial obligation,” says DiPaola.

Reason to believe

Published data shows even retarring a road more than two miles away can affect the success rate of IVF.

“We are located right next to a growing community, off a highway and next to an expanding hospital and we really wanted to insulate that environment such that whatever happened around us that would put us in a position to be successful and help our patients get pregnant,” says DiPaola

DiPaola says this is still very new technology and big centers around the country are calling UC to find out how it’s working.

Fire guts nearby restaurant –LifeAire System installation locks out the danger

Naperville, IL (July 6, 2014) – A devastating restaurant fire in Naperville, Illinois unleashed plumes of thick black smoke that saturated several city blocks Sunday. But the dangerous gases couldn’t harm the most fragile lives there – the embryos stored at nearby Naperville Fertility Center.

Dr. Randy Morris, Medical Director at Naperville Fertility Center gave the credit for their safety to the remarkable air purification system installed there by LifeAire Systems.

“Culturing embryos in a laboratory setting is a very difficult, complicated endeavor that requires the highest technical expertise. Air quality in the laboratory has been identified as a very important variable that can affect embryo development. There is no doubt in my mind that the smoke from Sunday’s restaurant fire could have affected the development of our patient’s embryos who were currently in the midst of an IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) cycle had they not been protected by our LifeAire System,” said Dr. Randy Morris, Medical Director at Naperville Fertility Center. “The LifeAire System was so highly effective at keeping our laboratory air pristine that you could literally smell the difference between the clean air inside the lab and the smoky air in the rest of the building.”

Founded by Kathryn C. Worrilow, Ph. D., LifeAire Systems air purification units are the result of two decades of research and were developed to provide contaminate free air essential for uncompromised and successful In Vitro Fertilization.

Naperville Fertility Center is the only Chicago-area In Vitro Fertilization program and laboratory with a LifeAire System in operation.
